Guided Biofilm Therapy
The latest, new generation of teeth cleaning technology!
What does GBT mean?
Guided Biofilm Theraphy (GBT) is a new Swiss innovation that has allowed dental hygienists to transform the patient experience by exchanging old-school methods for a revolutionary system that offers a lifetime of pain-free and fear-free oral healthcare for all ages.
GBT is highly effective, minimally invasive and gentle, meaning that people with gum disease, braces, crowns, bridges, veneers and implants are eligible for treatment. These procedures are so gentle they can be used on natural teeth, restorations, orthodontic braces, implants, the tongue and gums.
How is this different from the traditional method?
GBT uses AirFlow technology to remove all bacteria (biofilm) in the mouth that contribute to tooth decay and gum disease, while reducing your time in the hygienist chair from 20 to just 7 minutes.
GBT is a great option for those who want to remove all stains resulting from coffee, tea, wine and tobacco consumption, and should be done before receiving tooth whitening to achieve better results.
How does Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) work?
- The mouth is checked to identify any dental decay or gum disease. This allows the hygienist to assess your treatment needs.
- Teeth are disclosed with a dye that makes biofilm visible. You are then shown any problem areas, which will help to personalise your oral hygiene routine. The colour will also guide the biofilm removal.
- Depending on your needs, a combination of up to three cleaning systems are used to gently remove biofilm, staining and light deposits. These procedures are so gentle they can be used on natural teeth, restorations, orthodontic braces, implants, the tongue and gums.
- The final check ensures all biofilm and deposits have been removed and screens one last time for any decay. Teeth are then protected with a fluoride seal.
- Based on your oral hygiene and a risk assessment, your next appointment will be scheduled. This is usually between 3 to 6 months.
With the use of the Air-Flow Max system, plaque removal reaches 100%, whereas traditional polishing with a polishing brush achieves only 85%.
Why you need hygiene appointments
Our teeth are covered in a sticky and colourless film made up of bacteria, known as biofilm. If this biofilm is not removed, it can build up around the area between the teeth and the gums, resulting in gum disease (the first sign of which is bleeding gums). The bacteria in biofilm can also break down enamel when it comes in contact with sugary foods and drinks, ultimately causing tooth decay.
Today’s technology enables patients to have effective and pain-free professional dental hygiene care.
When is it recommended to choose Biofilm Therapy?
Airflow Prophylaxis Master device – the most advanced oral hygiene tool.
With the Swiss EMS Airflow Prophylaxis Master device, we clean the teeth from tartar, plaque, and even the smallest discolorations using a painless and highly gentle polishing protocol. This device is currently the most advanced dental hygiene tool in the world, enabling the application of the so-called Guided Biofilm Therapy (Guided Biofilm Therapy®).
- If you want to experience the most modern oral hygiene treatment available today. Once you try it, you won’t want to go back to traditional tartar removal methods!
- Preserving healthy teeth: You want to prevent tooth decay, tartar buildup, or periodontal disease in time.
- Long-term maintenance of oral health is important to you.
- Your goal is to extend the lifespan of dental restorations, implants, and fillings.
- If you suffer from periodontal disease and want to keep your teeth healthy for as long as possible. The EMS device and Guided Biofilm Therapy are widely used in periodontology because the Airflow PLUS powder can effectively and gently remove biofilm accumulated under the gums using a special perioflow nozzle, reaching depths of up to 9 mm.
- During orthodontic treatment, you want to maintain the hygiene of hard-to-clean areas. In this case, the most effective solution is Airflow Max.
- No more polishing rubber, no more polishing brush, no more paste.
- Treatment of gum recession: Biofilm removal in cases of gum recession provides maximum comfort and a completely painless experience compared to traditional treatments.
- Protection of dental restorations: The best cleaning method for implants, crowns, veneers, and bridges without damaging titanium or ceramic surfaces.
- Treatment of peri-implantitis – Inflammation occurring around implants (peri-implantitis) can be effectively treated with minimal bleeding using PERIOFLOW PLUS powder and a special piezon head, the Piezon PI, designed to remove tartar from implants.

How is the Guided Biofilm Therapy treatment performed step by step?
The GBT protocol consists of 8 steps.
1. Assessment
Before every treatment, the first and most important step is the assessment. This is the first step of the GBT protocol. It is crucial to examine the condition of your teeth and entire oral cavity, diagnose the state of your teeth, implants, and soft tissues, and assess the risk of tooth decay. These factors determine the most appropriate – if necessary – further dental treatments for you.
2. Making the biofilm visible
Using an application, we make the invisible dental plaque, or biofilm layer, visible. This biofilm forms on supragingival areas (on hard surfaces) such as teeth, implants, dental restorations, and orthodontic appliances.
Why do we stain the biofilm?
Because it is not visible to the naked eye. The goal of Guided Biofilm Therapy is to remove 100% of the biofilm. By making the invisible biofilm visible, we can remove it more quickly and effectively. WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU REMOVE. Additionally, it serves as motivation and part of Oral Hygiene Instruction (OHI). What you cannot see is harder to believe exists. When we stain it, the different colors indicate how long the biofilm has been present in your oral cavity. Once we remove the stained areas, we have also removed the biofilm.
3. Airflow®
The Airflow Plus powder is the first high-tech powder that minimally invasively removes biofilm and immature tartar from all types of surfaces: enamel, dentin, soft tissue, restorations, orthodontic appliances, and implant surfaces. The erythritol-based molecule allows for unique use both supragingivally and subgingivally (above and below the gum line).
4. Perioflow®
During Guided Biofilm Therapy, if necessary, we also clean deeper pockets or the surface of implants. This is a revolutionary, simple, effective, and gentle way to clean these areas.
5. Ultrasonic Tartar Removal with Original PIEZON Technology
The essence of the original PIEZON technology is its gentleness, ensuring maximum efficiency while preserving the surrounding tissues. The linear vibration, combined with intelligent feedback, enables a painless treatment (NO PAIN technology). This tartar removal process no longer causes discomfort or pain, as the PIEZON tip only activates when it comes into contact with tartar. This prevents unnecessary contact with healthy tooth surfaces, eliminating unnecessary pain.
6. Inspection
After the cleaning is completed, we carefully check whether all areas have been properly cleaned, and we review the results together with you. You can see in the handheld mirror how much brighter and cleaner your teeth look compared to traditional cleaning methods. We will also discuss whether any additional dental treatments might be necessary.
7. Instruction and Motivation
We thoroughly and in detail discuss the essential oral care routine you will need in the future. We demonstrate the practical use of oral hygiene tools, individually assess them, and provide recommendations for their usage. You will leave the clinic knowing exactly what to use and how to use it.
8. Recall
In our view, a healthy patient = a happy patient. That’s why we always discuss individually when you should return for a follow-up examination to prevent more serious dental problems. We schedule your next GBT appointment, and if you wish, we will keep track of it and remind you when the time comes.
My Patients' Reviews
"Pain-free teeth cleaning and tartar removal do exist. I didn't believe it either. In the past, I have spent many hours teaching medical communication and psychology to dental students at the university. I know how much people fear these treatments. That’s why I recommend Heni!"
